Frequently Asked Questions
A stair lift consists of a motorized carriage that rides along a rail attached to the staircase. The user sits on the chair, fastens the seatbelt, and operates the lift using a joystick or toggle control on the armrest. Most stair lifts also include remote controls. The lift runs on a household electrical circuit and includes a battery backup for power outages.
Straight staircase stair lifts cost approximately $2,000–$5,000 installed. Curved staircase lifts (requiring custom-bent rail) are significantly more expensive — $8,000–$15,000 or more. Rental options are available for short-term needs (post-surgery recovery). Reconditioned models from reputable dealers can reduce costs for straight staircases.
Standard Medicare does not cover stair lifts. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a home modification benefit that may contribute to stair lift costs. VA grants (Specially Adapted Housing) may fund stair lifts for qualifying veterans with service-connected mobility limitations. State Medicaid waiver programs cover stair lifts in some states.
Most stair lift rails can be installed on staircases as narrow as 28 inches. Standard stair lifts typically require 28–30 inches minimum of clear width. When folded, most stair lift seats leave 15–18 inches of clear passage — generally sufficient for others to use the staircase. A dealer measurement visit will confirm fit before purchase.
